DESCRIPTION:
San Sebastian nestles in the Sierra Madre Mountains, with rural charm, stunning scenery and a colonial, old world air.
This expedition, through the towns of Ixtapa and Las Palmas, will take you far from the hotels and attractions of Puerto Vallarta to San Sebastian. San Sebastian is an old mining town, located in a deep vallery. It has evolved into one of the best places in the state of Jalisco to enjoy the natural world. It's a scenic trip, offering foggy mountain sightings, exuberant vegetation and rustic towns, where people still live in their ancestral homes.
San Sebastian del Oeste, to give it its full name, was founded in 1605. The town quickly rose to prominence as a gold and silver mining area, with a population of 40,000 at its height. These days, the town has shrunk to just 600 people, with the streets and buildings reflecting the grandeur of that earlier age. Though the mines and the people have gone, little else has changed in San Sebastian for centuries.
The whole town feels very different from neighbouring Puerto Vallarta. The pine trees of the Sierra Madre Mountains shelter it, so the air can be very crisp and refreshing. The temperature can dip sharply at night, until you actually feel chill. Just the place for those with sunburn to relax! The beautiful surroundings are home to cattle, corn or coffee plantations. The home roasted coffee beans can be sampled in the town. This coffee is excellent and really should be tasted.
The architecture is purely colonial. The snow-white buildings cluster around cobblestone plazas. There are several 18th century haciendas; one of which serves as a local museum. The original church, built in the 16th century and dedicated, unsurprisingly, to St Sebastian, was destroyed in an earthquake in 1868. Another church was quickly erected from its ashes and remains today as a beautiful 18th century building. There is also an extremely quaint, classic Porfirian bandstand.
San Sebastian has been submitted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
