DESCRIPTION:
Tour the real Maya, through Cobá ruins, a secluded cenote and an authentic Mayan village.
Cobá

Ever wanted to visit a lost world, surrounded by jungle, with towering trees making archways of their roots? With pyramids that can be climbed for panaromic views of the jungle stretching off into the far horizon; two lagoons within the main complex and many more dotted around the landscape; 7th century hieroglyphics; and elevated ancient roadways? Cobá may be the place for you. It is so recently uncovered by archaeologists that much of the city is still lost beneath the foliage. It is difficult to stand beneath its mysterious ruins and not secretly pretend that you are Indiana Jones.

The ancient Mayan city of Cobá is built around two lagoons. There are several temple pyramids on the site. It is worth climbing to the top of the Nohoch Mul pyramid, at 130ft the tallest pyramid in the Yucatán peninsula, for the stunning panaromic view over miles of jungle. There is a perfectly perserved ballcourt. Raised walkways and roads bisect the jungle, leading to smaller settlements close by and the Carribean Sea 40km away. The jungle clusters in waiting to take this city over again.

Cobá was founded around 500 CE, with most of the hieroglypics there dating from the 7th century. The highest concentration of raised walkways and roads in the Yucatán Peninsula is here. That suggests that Cobá was once an important city. Researchers have estimated that 50,000 people lived here at its height. They would have farmed the local landscape and imported items to neighbouring communities or to the ports of Tulum and Xel-Ha. Beyond that very little is known. There is evidence that people still lived here in the 14th century; and speculation that their community survived until the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century.

Visitors to the site now are entering a magnificent, but largely still unexplored Mayan city. Off the main tourist route, it attracts fewer people than the better known Chichén Itzá, but that peacefulness is just part of its charm. It adds to the sense of the strange and quiets the mind in beautiful ways.

It is 1m to walk from the modern road into the site; another 2m to Nohoch Mul. Visitors can ride in the back of a bicycle taxi to traverse the distance 90 pesos, or else hire bicyles for themselves 30 pesos (approx $3 each). But many prefer to continue on foot. This is a expedition through a small, but well-worn pathway through the jungle. The bicycle taxis wait at Nohoch Mul, if you wish to hire one for the return journey.

The Cenote

The cenote, with its unique underground cave, are glorious. Visitors can refresh themselves while swimming in the transparent waters.

Mayan Village

Visit a real Mayan village, considered by many to be the highlight of the day. It is a memorable experience, wherein you will meet modern Mayan people. You will see for yourself how this ancient community have survived the centuries and conquest with their culture intact.
